SPECIAL Bird Flu rears its head again
| |
In the upcoming movie, “Contagion”, the characters follow the rapid progress of a lethal airborne influenza virus that kills within days. As the fast-moving epidemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. At the same time, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart. This may be an extraodinary example of “life imitating art”. Worldwide, there have been renewed concerns about avian flu. Bird flu was in decline, but health officials warned recently that it appears to be on the rise again.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations urged heightened readiness and surveillance against a possible major resurgence of the H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza amid signs that a mutant strain of the deadly Bird Flu virus is spreading in Asia and beyond, with unpredictable risks to human health.

ARTICLE DNA Aptamer Sensors: Glucose Meters modified to measure many different analytes
| |
Researchers from the U. Illinois have devised a way to use inexpensive personal glucose meters (PGMs) to detect and measure a wide variety of substances in solution, including cocaine, biomolecules like adenosine and interferon, and metal ions like uranium (1, 2). Chemist Yi Lu of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and postdoc Yu Xiang used functional DNA, or aptamers, to recognize molecules of interest. Aptamers are similar to antibodies in that they have strong affinity for particular molecules based on charge and shape. Instead of protein-based antibodies, aptamers are short (20–80mer) DNA sequences that bind a target molecule with high affinity and specificity.

Repurposed Personal glucose meters can measure invertase-catalyzed glucose production to quantify a target substance.
