Brain Heart Infusion Broth is used for the cultivation fastidious microorganisms, including streptococci, pneumococci and meningococci from a variety of clinical and non-clinical materials.

Description:
Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) Broth is a modification of the media described by Rosenow and Hayden in which infusion from calf brains has replaced the brain tissue and disodium phosphate has replaced the calcium carbonate buffer. The addition of 0.1% agar can be used to lower oxygen tension to enhance the growth of anaerobic organisms.

Microorganisms:
Aspergillus niger ATCC 16404: Poor to very good
Candida albicans ATCC 10231: Good to excellent
Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212: Good to excelelnt
Escherichia coli ATCC 25922: Very good to excellent
Neisseria meningitides ATCC 13090: Fair to good
Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853: Good to excellent
Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 9763: Good to excellent
Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923: Very good to excellent
Streptococcus pneumoniae ATCC 6305: Good to excellent
Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 19615: Good to excellent
