Interferon-gamma (IFN- , also known as Type II interferon or immune interferon) is a cytokine produced primarily by T-lymphocytes and natural killer cells. The protein shares no significant homology with IFN-& or the various IFN- family proteins. Mature IFN- exists as noncovalently-linked homodimers. Human IFN- is highly species specific and is biologically active only in human and primate cells. IFN- was originally characterized based on its antiviral activities. The protein also exerts anti-proliferative, immunoregulatory and proinflammatory activities and is thus important in host defense mechanisms. IFN- induces the production of cytokines, upregulates the expression of class I and II MHC antigens, Fc receptor and leukocyte adhesion molecules. It modulates macrophage effector functions, influences isotype switching and potentiates the secretion of immunoglobulins by B cells. IFN- also augments TH1 cell expansion and may be required for TH1 cell differentiation. IFN- exerts its biological activities by binding to specific cell surface receptors with high-affinity binding sites. The IFN- receptor is present on almost all cell types except mature erythrocytes and has been cloned and characterized. The IFN- receptor is structurally related to the recently cloned IL-10 receptor. Source: E. coli Biological Activity: Bioactivity is detected using WISH cell (a heteroploid human amnion cell line) as dependent cell strain. The specific activity shall be not less than 1.5×10e7 IU/mg of protein. Endotoxin: 1EU/ug (LAL) Storage and Stability: Lyophilized powder may be stored at -20°C. Stable for 6 months at -20°C. Reconstitute with sterile ddH2O. Aliquot and store at -20°C. Reconstituted product is stable for 1 month at 4 °C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer. Molecular Weight: ~17kD |
