Metallothionein (MT)
Description:
Metallothioneins (MTs) are a group of low molecular weight cystein-rich proteins that have the ability to bind and sequestrate heavy metal ions. Synthesis of MT is induced in a variety of tissues by these metal ions, as well as by other factors such as glucocorticoids, interferon, lymphokines and stress. Two major forms, M1 and M2, are distributed in most adult mammalian tissues. Metallothionein has been implicated in carcinogenesis. Immunostaining has shown that overexpression of MT has been related with the type and grade of some tumors such as ductal breast carcinoma, skin carcinoma, cervical carcinoma, pancreatic carcinoma, prostate carcinoma, melanoma, renal cell carcinoma and bladder cancer. Overexpression of MTs appears to be mostly associated with locally invasive carcinomas of poor histological type and grade and may indicate a reduced overall survival rate and a higher probability of local reoccurrence of the tumor. Overexpression of MT has also been reported to be related to tumor resistance to a chemotherapeutic agent.

Applications:
Suitable for use in Immunohistochemistry. Other applications have not been tested.

Recommended Dilution:
Immunohistochemistry: Frozen and formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections. Epitope Retrieval: Not Required. Enzyme Digestion: Not Required.
Optimal dilutions to be determined by the researcher.

Storage and Stability:
May be stored at 4C for short-term only. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20C. Aliquots are stable for at least 12 months. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.
