Nerve Growth Factor is the first of a series of neurotrophic factors that were found to influence the growth and differentiation of sympathetic and sensory neurons. It is comprised of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits. The beta subunit is responsible for its growth stimulating activity. The synthesis of NGF in astrocytes is enhanced by various other cytokines: IL-1, TNF-alpha, PDGF and TGF-beta. Mouse beta-NGF is a noncovalently disulfide-linked homodimer consisting of two 13.4kD polypeptide monomers (240 total amino acid residues). The three disulfide bonds are required for biological activity.

Biological Activity: b-NGF is fully biologically active when compared to standards. Activity was Measured in a cell proliferation assay using a factor-dependent human erythroleukemic cell line, TF-1, the ED50 for this effect is typically 0.3-1ng/ml corresponding to a Specific Activity of 1x106 IU/mg

Storage and Stability:
Lyophilized powder may be stored at -20C. Stable for 12 months at -20C. Reconstitute with sterile ddH2O, aliquot and store at -20C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.
