Papilloma Virus, Human, Type 16, L1 Protein
Human papillomavirus (HPV) are a family of sexually transmitted small DNA viruses. All HPV characterized to date are associated with lesions of the skin epithelium or the mucosal linings of the anogenital area, oral cavity, and respiratory tract. The most common (and benign) symptomatic presentation of an HPV infection is condylomata acuminata (genital warts). HPV is found in 70% to 90% of vaginal and vulvar cancers as well as in some oral cancers. Moreover, genetic information within HPV DNA has been proven to cause neoplastic transformation of cells in culture. There are over 100 types of HPV, of which HPV 16 is highly oncogenic being found in about fifty percent of invasive cancers worldwide. The HPV 16 capsid comprises two virally encoded structural proteins, which are assembled onto a DNA protein complex. Each capsid is composed of 72 pentameric capsomeres, each of which contains five molecules of the major capsid protein, L1. The minor capsid protein L2 is present at approximately 1/10 of the abundance of L1 protein. Two HPV16 oncoproteins, E6 and E7, are actively expressed in cervical cancer cells and are responsible for host cell transformation and cancer progression. These oncoproteins affect cell growth at least in part through their association with and inactivation of cellular tumor suppressor proteins, p53 and Rb.

Storage and Stability:
May be stored at 4C for short-term only. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20C. Aliquots are stable for at least 12 months. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.
