Mouse Anti-CRISPR (Cas9, CRISPR-Associated Endonuclease Cas9/Csn1, CRISPR-Cas9/Csn1, Csn1, SpyCas9)
Cas9, CRISPR-associated endonuclease Cas9/Csn1, CRISPR-Cas9/Csn1, csn1, SpyCas9
Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR) and associated CRISPR-associated nuclease (cas) proteins comprise the CRISPR/cas systems that are responsible for adaptive immunity in many bacteria and archaea. Three types of CRISPR/cas systems have been identified to date, which have been designated type I, II and III. Cas9 is an RNA guided DNA nuclease associated with the type II CRISPR/Cas adaptive immune system. In prokaryotes, the CRISPR/Cas9 system provides protection against viruses and plasmids by targeting foreign nucleic acids with short complementary single stranded RNA that localizes the Cas9 nuclease to the target DNA sequence, introducing double strand breaks at specific locations within the genomic DNA.
In recent years, scientists have recognized the importance of the CRISPR/cas system as a tool for genomic editing and engineering. In particular, the type II CRISPR/cas9 system derived from Streptococcus pyogenes has been adapted and utilized as the genome engineering tool of choice. The CRISPR/Cas9 system has the potential to transform developmental biology by providing a simple, efficient method to precisely manipulate the genome of virtually any developing organism
