Mesembrine is a naturally occurring alkaloid that is found in plants of the genus Rauwolfia. It has been used as an anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor agent, and is also known to have hepatoprotective properties. Mesembrine has been shown to induce conformational changes in antibodies, which stimulates the production of antibodies that are specific for the new conformation. It also induces an antibody response against infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria. The skeletal system of animals treated with mesembrine have exhibited a significant increase in locomotor activity, which may be attributed to its ability to inhibit bone resorption and stimulate bone formation. Mesembrine has been shown to have metabolic effects on mice, including lowering body weight and increasing liver weight. This is likely due to its ability to inhibit fatty acid synthesis by blocking the activity of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC).
