N-Propyl-4-hydroxybenzoate (NPHB) is a preservative that belongs to the class of glycol ethers. It is used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics as an anti-microbial agent. NPHB is effective against Gram positive bacteria and fungi, but not against Gram negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. NPHB is also used as an analytical reagent for the determination of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (pHBA) in drugs and other products. The matrix effect can be eliminated by using a mixture of methanol and water as the solvent. It has been shown that cancer tissues have higher enzyme activities than normal tissues, which may result in increased sensitivity to this compound.
