| Type I collagen is present in soft connective tissue and bone where it represents approximately 90% of the organic matrix. Type I collagen is produced from procollagen when two teloterminal propeptides are digested from the procursor and released into the circulation. Defects in one or both alleles of the type I collagen gene causes “brittle bone” disorder (osteogenesis imperfecta). Patients suffering from such defects have low levels of fully functional type I collagen resulting in bones that break very easily. |
