C5 is involved in the activation of the lythic pathway within the complement system which is an important factor in innate immunity. The complement pathways can be divided in the activation pathways and lytic pathway. The activation pathways lead via C3 to the cleavage of the fifth complement component C5 into C5a and C5b. C5b initiates the assembly of the membrane attack complex (MAC) that mediates cytolysis.

Applications
Suitable for use in ELISA, Western Blot, Immunohistochemistry and Immunocytochemistry. Other applications not tested.
Recommended Dilutions
Immunohistochemistry (Frozen): 1:10. Incubation time 1hr at RT. Optimal dilutions to be determined by the researcher.
Storage and Stability
Lyophilized and reconstituted products are stable for 12 months after receipt at -20°C. Reconstitute with sterile ddH2O. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20°C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.
Immunogen
Activated human complement component C5.
Form
Supplied as a lyophilized powder in PBS, pH 7.4, 0.5% BSA, 0.09% sodium azide. Reconstitute with 1ml sterile ddH2O.
Purity
Purified by Protein A affinity chromatography.
Specificity
Recognizes human C5b-9 complexes via activated C5, especially in different forms of glomerulonephritis. Does not react with native C5 (See C7850-23). Normal fresh and activated serum subjected to SDS-PAGE Western Blot (nonreduced), visualizes reactivity with the SDS-denatured C5 (200kD) abd C5b (185kD), the latter together with a faint cleavage product (60kD) only after activation.|Species Crossreactivity: Primates, bovine, porcine and goat.
