Mucins (MUCs) are heavily glycosylated glycoproteins that are synthesized either as membrane-bound or secreted proteins. Mucins are noteworthy because they have an aberrant expression profile in various malignancies. Mucins normally play a protective role for epithelial tissues. They are expressed in the gastrointestinal, respiratory and genito-urinary tracts. Mucins may be involved in the renewal and differentiation of the epithelium, and the modulation of cell adhesion and cell signaling. MUC5B is thought to play a vital role in maintaining oral health, and may be involved in respiratory and oral disease. MUC5B expression has been studied in gastric carcinoma as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Note: Western Blot and Immunohistochemistry require deglycosylation. Refer to protocols.

Storage and StabilityMay be stored at 4°C for short-term only. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20°C. Aliquots are stable for 12 months. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.

ImmunogenSynthetic peptide derived from the N-terminal region of the human MUC5B protein.
SpecificityRecognizes the calculated ~590kD human MUC5B protein. On Western Blots, recognizes a band significantly higher than 250kD. Reactivity has been confirmed with deglycosylated and secreted media from primary human tracheobranchial epithelial culture and a deglycosylated human saliva sample. Immunohistochemical assays were also performed using trachea samples from both normal and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.
