| Rab24 is an atypical member of the Rab GTPase family involved in the regulation of macroautophagy and the degradation of misfolded proteins or nucleocytoplasmic transport. Unlike other members of the family, the protein appears to have a very low intrinsic GTPase activity. Furthermore, Rab24 is not efficiently geranylgeranylated and does not form a detectable complex with a carrier protein, guanine nucleotide dissociation inhibitor (GDI). Northern blot analyses confirm the ubiquitous expression of the protein in human tissues, with the mRNA being most abundant in heart, pancreas and peripheral blood leukocytes, with comparatively low expression in brain. The expression of Rab24 mRNA in peripheral blood mononucleated cells is induced in patients with tuberculosis.
