Pentraxin 2, also known as Serum Amyloid P-Component (SAP), is a hepatocyte-derived glycoprotein that is a nonfibrillar component of amyloid deposits. Pentraxins have a characteristic pentagonal discoid arrangement of five non-covalently bound subunits. Plasma levels of SAP in rat are relatively constant during an acute phase immune response. SAP functions as an opsonin and interacts with Fc-Gamma receptors. The 26 kD, 208 amino acid (aa) mature rat SAP shares 79% and 70% aa identity with mouse and human SAP, respectively.
