This protein is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF family members possess broad mitogenic and cell survival activities, and are involved in a variety of biological processes, including embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth, and invasion. It has been shown in vitro that this protein is able to induce neurite outgrowth in PC12 cells. Studies of the similar proteins in mouse and chick suggested that this protein is a pleiotropic growth factor that stimulates proliferation in a number of tissues, most notably the liver and small intestine. Knockout studies of the similar gene in mice implied the role of this protein in regulating proliferation and differentiation of midline cerebellar structures.

Molecular Weight: 21.2kD, 182 amino acid residues

Biological Activity:
ED50 0.5 ng/ml ( 2x10e6 units/mg), determined by the dose dependent stimulation of thymidine uptake by BaF3 cells expressing FGF-receptors. FGF-18 is a member of the FGF family of proteins and bears strong sequence homology with FGF-8. FGF-18 is expressed by lung and kidney and at lower levels by skeletal muscle, heart, brain and other tissues. FGF-18 stimulates the proliferation of liver and small intestine.

Storage and Stability:
Lyophilized powder may be stored at -20C. Reconstitute to nominal volume by adding 5mM Tris. Aliquot and store at -20C. Reconstituted product is stable for 12 months at -20C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.
Purity: 95% by SDS PAGE and HPLC analyses. Endotoxin: 0.1 ng/ug
Form: Lyophilized from 10 mM Tris, pH 8.0. Sterile filtered prior to lyophilization. Reconstitute in 5mM Tris, pH 8.0, to a concentration of 0.1-1mg/mL. Further dilutions should be made in aqueous buffers supplemented with carrier protein, such as 0.1-1% BSA.
