Galactose oxidase (GAO) produced by the fungus Dactylium dendroides is used in the quantitative determination of galactose in blood and other biological fluids. Because GAO oxidizes galactose even in polysaccharides it has been used to locate galactose histochemically and to detect and distinguish glycoproteins.

Unit Definition:
1 unit is a change in absorbance at 425 nm of 1.0 per minute at 25ºC, pH 6.0, in a coupled peroxidase/o-tolidine system, using galactose as a substrate.

Storage and Stability:
May be stored at 4°C for short-term only. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20°C. Aliquots are stable for 6 months at -20°C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.
