IL-1alpha is a non-secreted proinflammatory cytokine produced in a variety of cells including monocytes, tissue macrophages, keratinocytes and other epithelial cells. Both IL-1alpha and IL-1beta binds to the same receptor and has similar if not identical biological properties. These cytokines have a broad range of activities including, stimulation of thymocyte proliferation, by inducing IL-2 release, B-cell maturation and proliferation, mitogenic FGF-like activity and the ability to stimulate the release of prostaglandin and collagenase from synovial cells. However, whereas IL-1beta is a secreted cytokine, IL-1alpha is predominantly a cell-associated cytokine. Murine IL-1a is a 17.9kD protein containing 156 amino acid residues.

Form: Lyophilized from 1mM Tris buffer solution. May also be supplied as a liquid.

Stability: The lyophilized protein, though stable at room temperature, is best stored desiccated below 0C. Reconstituted murine IL-1a should be stored in working aliquots at -20C.

Reconstitution: Lyophilized murine IL-1a is soluble in water and most aqueous buffers. The lyophilized protein can be reconstituted in water to a concentration of 100ug/ml. This solution can be diluted into other buffered solutions or stored at -20C for future use. For most in vitro applications, IL-1a exerts its biological activity in the concentration range of 0.1 to 10.0 ng/ml.

Biological Activity: Murine IL-1a is fully biologically active when compared to standards. The ED50 as determined by the dose-dependent stimulation of murine D10S cells is 0.002ng/ml, corresponding to a specific activity of 5x10e8 units/mg.
