m-Enterocpccus Agar is a selective agar medium used in membrane filtration procedure or in direct plating for the detection and enumeration of enterococci in water, food or other materials.

Quality Control Specifications:

Homogeneous powder, free-flowing and light beige.
Visually the prepared medium is clear to slightly hazy and light to medium pinkish-beige.
Expected cultural response after 18-48 hours at 35C.


Preparation: Mix 42g of medium in 1.0L of purified sterile water until evenly dispersed. Heat with repeated stirring and boil for one minute to dissolve completely.

DO NOT AUTOCLAVE.

m-Enterococcus Agar is an improved agar which was found to be superior in the isolation, selectivity and enumeration of enterococci found in heavily polluted waters. Using m-Enterococcus Agar, higher counts for enterococci were obtained when compared to the standard MPN procedures. The addition of 0.2% sodium carbonate and 0.05% Tween 80 to this medium gave better results than 15 other culture media used for the direct plating of Enterococcus.:

Testing Results:

Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 19433): Growth, pink-red colonies. Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922)

Storage: Store the sealed bottle containing the dehydrated medium at 2-30C. Once opened and recapped, place the container in a low humidity environment with the same storage temperature. Protect from moisture and light. The dehydrated medium should be discarded if it is not free flowing or if the color has changed from the original light beige.
