Chemokine SDF-1 is highly conserved among species and belongs to a large family of small, structurally related cytokines. It is a chemoattractant for T lymphocytes, monocytes, and hemopoietic stem cells and is constitutively expressed in bone-marrow-derived stromal cells. Recent reports indicate that SDF-1 is the ligand for LESTR/fusin and prevents infection by T-cell-line-adapted HIV-1. SDF-1a and SDF-1b, are generated by alternative RNA splicing of transcripts encoded by a single gene. SDF-1a differs from SDF-1b by four C-terminal amino acid residues absent in SDF-1a. As yet, no functional differences have been reported.

Stromal Cell-Derived Factor-1a (SDF1a) is a recently discovered protein belonging to the a-chemokine (C-X-C) family of cytokines. Murine SDF1a is an 7.9kD protein containing 68 amino acid residues.

Storage and Stability: Lyophilized powder may be stored at 4C for short-term only. Reconstitute to nominal volume by adding sterile distilled water and store at -20C. Reconstituted product is stable for 12 months at -20C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.

Biological Activity: Determined by its ability to chemoattract human peripheral blood monocytes using a concentration of 50-100ng/ml.

Concentration Range for most in vitro applications: 0.1-1 mg/ml
