Transferrin is a 76kD glycoprotein in the serum that transports iron to the entire body from the liver and the intestine, the sites of storage and absorption, respectively (1). Transferrin exists in two forms, the iron-free apotransferrin, which binds two Fe3+ ions to generate ferrotransferrin. Iron uptake is achieved by receptor-mediated endocytosis of ferrotransferrin-bound transferrin receptor on cell surface. The ferrotransferrin-receptor complex is recruited to an acidified endosome, where Fe3+ ions disssociate from the complex and are transported across the membrane into the cytosol. Apotransferrin remains tightly bound to its receptor until the complex is recycled to the cell surface, where apotransferrin is released into extracellular space to recruit more Fe3+ ions.

Applications: Suitable for use in IEP, Gel Diffusion and ELISA.
Optimal dilutions to be determined by researcher.

Storage and Stability:
May be stored at 4C for short-term only. For long-term storage and to avoid repeated freezing and thawing, aliquot and add glycerol (40-50%). Freeze at -20C. Aliquots are stable for at least 12 months at -20C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.
