CD63 is a lysosomal granule-membrane glycoprotein and has been detected on the surface and in the cytoplasma of a variety of cells, particularly in platelets; surface expression indicates lysosomal secretion. CD63, present only in azurophil granules of non-stimulated neutrophils, is strongly expressed at the surface of neutrophils after activation showing that CD63 is a good marker for granule release; this phenomenon has been also reported for basophils. CD63 is present in cell line PHA blasts, K562, U937, KG1a, RAJI. Both surface and cytoplasmic reactions are reported. CD63 antigen has a diverse distribution on the surface and in the cytoplasm of many cell types including lymphoid, myeloid, endothelial cells and melanoma.
