C5 is involved in the activation of the lythic pathway within the complement system which is an important factor in innate immunity. The complement pathways can be divided in the activation pathways and lytic pathway. The activation pathways lead via C3 to the cleavage of the fifth complement component C5 into C5a and C5b. C5a induces smooth muscle contraction, increases vascular permeability, causes degranulation of mast cells and basophils, and release of lysosomal enzymes. In addition C5a stimulates the directed migration of neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils and monocytes. Recent studies indicate the modulation of the acute-phase response in liver and an overall immune response by inducing synthesis of cytokines such as TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, IL-6 and IL-8.

Applications
Suitable for use in ELISA and Neutralization. Other applications have not been tested.
Recommended Dilutions
Neutralization of Biological Activity: In vitro dilutions have to be made according to the amounts of C5/C5a to be inactivated Optimal dilutions to be determined by the researcher.
Storage and Stability
May be stored at 4°C for short-term only. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20°C. Aliquots are stable for 12 months after receipt. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.
Immunogen
Human C5/C5a
Form
Supplied as a liquid in PBS, 0.1% BSA.
Purity
Purified by Protein G affinity chromatography.
Specificity
Recognizes the N-terminus of human C5. Reacts both with intact C5 (190kD) as with C5a (115kD).
