R2A medium was developed by workers at the EFIA for the recovery and isolation of aerobic and facultative anaerobic heterotrophic bacteria from treated potable water. R2A Medium enhances the recovery of stressed bacteria due to the low concentration of carbon and energy sources and the addition of sodium pyruvate.

Casein Digest Peptone 0.25g Peptic Digest of Animal Tissue 0.25g Glucose 0.5g Magnesium Sulfate Heptahydrate 0.05g Sodium Pyruvate 0.3g Yeast Extract 0.5g Casein Acid Hydrolysate 0.5g Soluable Starch 0.5g Dipotassium Phosphate 0.3g Agar 5.0g Total: 18.2g/L
Directions per Liter
Dissolve 18.2 grams in 800-900ml of ddH2O. Heat with repeated stirring and boil for one minute to dissolve completely. Add additional water to bring the solution to 1L. Dispense into appropriate containers, loosen caps and autoclave for 15 minutes at 121ºC.
